Tamarysk is a recording and sheet music project - we make recordings, and also release the sheet music for each piece as digital scores, so that other people can download and play them too.
The original music played by Tamarysk is all instrumental, influenced mainly by European folk traditions as well as drawing on some elements of classical and rock.
The current sheet music collection contains pieces for viola and piano, with an optional counterpoint part - played by Tom on electric guitar, but scored in treble clef for violin.
Helen plays viola and piano and wrote most of the music for Tamarysk. She has also published a book of her own tunes, originally written for viola, but playable on a wide variety of instruments.
Tom plays electric 5 string guitar (tuned in 5ths) and electric mandolin. He built most of the instruments and amps he uses in Tamarysk, and also the pickup system for the viola. He is working on a pickup system for Northumbrian pipes. He also writes tunes, including some additions to the Tamarysk repertoire.
Alice plays a chromatically extended 17 keyed set of Northumbrian pipes. Though strongly rooted in the Northumbrian tradition, she experiments with different genres of music on the pipes. She comes from a from a North Northumbrian farm and is currently a post-graduate musicology student at Durham University.
